WhatsApp taking up too much storage? How to free space that stays free
"WhatsApp is that one app you want to delete so badly but just can't" picked up about 6,000 likes on X on October 22. X's trending summary of the reactions put phone storage near the top of the complaints, with media, backups and duplicates that linger after people clear their chats. Most of that space is media, and WhatsApp has tools to find it and clear it without touching your chat history.
Back up your chats before you start. WhatsApp recommends it, and some of the deletes below can't be undone.
1. See what's using the space
On Android, tap the three-dot menu, then Settings > Storage and data > Manage storage. On iPhone, go to the Settings tab, then Storage and data > Manage storage.
The total WhatsApp is using on your phone sits at the top of that screen. Below it, WhatsApp groups files that are larger than 5 MB and files that have been forwarded many times, then lists your chats and channels by how much media each one holds.
You'll often see a different number in your phone's own storage settings. WhatsApp's Help Center says that's because the app and the phone's operating system calculate storage differently, so don't treat the mismatch as a fault.
2. Delete in bulk from the biggest chats
Tap a chat or channel in that list. Use the sort button to order files by Largest, then:
- Tap and hold a file to select it, and tap more files, or use Select all.
- Tap the trash icon.
- If WhatsApp offers to delete copies (Delete any copies on Android, Delete items and any copies on iPhone), choose it. A meme forwarded into four groups is stored four times, and only deleting every copy frees the space.
- Confirm.
Two things to know first. Files you delete here are gone for good: you can't download them again from the chat. And the delete only applies to you, so everyone else in the chat still has the file.
On iPhone, if your selection includes starred messages, WhatsApp lets you pick Delete all except starred. That's an easy way to keep the few files you meant to save.
You can get to the same tool from inside a chat: tap the chat name, then Manage storage. WhatsApp added this per-chat view so you can clear large files from one conversation without wiping it.
3. Clear media but keep the messages
If one group is mostly photos and videos you'll never open again, clear its media and leave the text alone. On Android, open the chat, tap the menu, then More > Clear chat, choose Clear media files, and tick the types to remove: videos and GIFs, photos, stickers, documents or audio. Leave Clear starred messages unticked unless you want those gone too.
Clear chat on its own deletes everything in the conversation, including messages and links. The chat stays in your list, and you stay in the group, but the history is gone. If you might need that text later, export it first.
4. Why the space didn't come back
This is the most common complaint. In one r/whatsapp thread, a Samsung user deleted three groups' worth of media, about 10,000 files by their count, and got back less than 1 GB.
WhatsApp's Help Center explains part of it: an item you delete can still be saved on your device, and duplicates have to be removed too. MakeUseOf found nearly 6 GB of media still sitting on its writer's phone from chats that had already been deleted.
On Android, check the WhatsApp media folder with your phone's Files app. On recent Android versions it's at Internal storage > Android > media > com.whatsapp > WhatsApp > Media, with separate folders for images, video, documents and voice notes. One commenter in that Reddit thread suggested starting with the video folder, since it tends to be large. Anything you delete there is removed from the phone, so copy what you want to a computer first. WhatsApp's Help Center notes that on phones without internal storage the WhatsApp folder is on the SD card, so check there if that's your setup.
On iPhone, photos and videos that WhatsApp saved to your camera roll are separate copies in the Photos app. Deleting them in WhatsApp doesn't remove them from Photos, and anything you delete in Photos sits in Recently Deleted until you empty it.
5. Stop it filling up again
Two settings stop most of the buildup.
Auto-download. In Settings > Storage and data, under Media auto-download, choose what downloads on its own. On iPhone, each media type can be set to Never, Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi and cellular. On Android, you tick media types separately for mobile data, Wi-Fi and roaming. Videos are usually the largest files, so they're the first type to switch off. Files you don't auto-download stay in the chat as a download button, and you tap it when you want one.
Saving to your gallery. On Android, go to Settings > Chats and turn off Media visibility. On iPhone, the setting is Save to Photos under Settings > Chats. You can also set it per chat by tapping the contact or group name, so family photos still land in your gallery and a busy group's memes don't. WhatsApp notes that changing the main switch doesn't change choices you've already made for specific chats.
What about WhatsApp Web?
WhatsApp Web doesn't save received media to your computer unless you download a file yourself, so it isn't what's filling your phone. Your phone is where the storage goes, which is why the cleanup above all happens in the mobile app.
FAQ
Will clearing media delete my messages?
No. Clear media files and deleting items in Manage storage remove files only. Clear chat without the media option removes the messages too.
Can I get a deleted photo back?
Not from the chat. WhatsApp says items deleted through Manage storage can't be downloaded again. A backup made before you deleted may still have it.
Does deleting a file remove it for everyone?
No. Deleting in Manage storage only removes it from your phone. Other people in the chat keep their copy.
Why does WhatsApp show a different size from my phone's settings?
WhatsApp and your phone's operating system calculate storage differently, according to WhatsApp's Help Center, so the two numbers won't always match.
