WA Folders privacy policy

Effective: October 14, 2026 · Applies to: the WA Folders Chrome extension (version 1.2.9 and later) and the website wafolders.com.

The short version

What the extension reads

WA Folders runs only on https://web.whatsapp.com. To show folders, markers, search and exports, it reads what WhatsApp Web shows on your screen: chat names, chat ids, message text and times in chats you open, and whether a message is unread or from you. It does not read your phone, your contacts list outside WhatsApp Web, or other websites.

The website (wafolders.com)

wafolders.com is a static site hosted on GitHub Pages. It sets no cookies and runs no analytics or ad scripts. Like any web host, GitHub (and the domain's DNS provider) may log technical data such as IP addresses to deliver and protect the site; see GitHub's privacy statement. Links to the Chrome Web Store and Polar carry campaign tags (utm_…) that those services may record.

Chrome Web Store and Limited Use

The use of information received from Google APIs and from WhatsApp Web pages will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. WA Folders uses data only to provide the features you see. It does not sell data, use it for advertising or credit decisions, or let humans read it. Data is transferred only as described above, to provide a feature you chose, or where the law requires.

The Chrome Web Store itself (Google) handles installs, reviews and the store's own install statistics under Google's privacy policy.

Retention and deletion

Your rights

Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR or CCPA), you may have rights to access, correct or delete personal data. Because WA Folders stores your data on your own device, you can do this directly. For purchase records held by Polar, email us and we'll help.

Children

WA Folders is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country) and we don't knowingly collect their data. WhatsApp itself sets a minimum age to use its service.

Security

Data stays in Chrome's extension storage. Password-protected exports use AES-GCM-256 with a PBKDF2-SHA-256 key (600,000 iterations); the PIN lock stores only a salted PBKDF2 hash.

AI agent access (version 1.3.1, off by default)

WA Folders can let an AI agent on your own computer (for example Claude Desktop, Cursor, Codex or another app that speaks the Model Context Protocol, "MCP") use folders you choose. It works only after you do all three: install the separate WA Folders agent bridge on your computer, turn on Settings > AI agent access (Chrome then asks for its "communicate with cooperating native applications" permission), and tick the folders the agent may use.

How it connects

The extension talks to the bridge through Chrome native messaging. The bridge is a small program on your computer that your AI app starts; the two connect over a local pipe on your machine only. The bridge makes no internet connections, and there is no WA Folders server in between.

What the agent can read

Only the folders you ticked. From those: folder names, chat names, your private notes, reminder times, and short snippets (the last few lines, up to 300 characters each) of messages WA Folders has already indexed on your computer. Each allowed folder can also be offered to the agent as a short summary ("resource", capped at about 4,000 tokens) so the agent has it as context. Chats in folders you did not tick, and chats in no folder, are never shared.

What the agent can do

Read-only by default. If you also turn on the separate write switch, the agent can add a chat to an allowed folder and set a WA Folders reminder. It can never send, read aloud, delete or open WhatsApp messages, and never presses Send. "Summarize chat" uses the AI key you set in WA Folders (Private AI) and goes to that provider only.

Retention, consent and control

Changes

If this policy changes, we'll update this page and the effective date. Significant changes will also be noted in the extension's what's-new card.
