WhatsApp Web stuck on "Loading your chats"? What to try, in order
You scan the QR code, the green bar fills up, and then WhatsApp Web sits on Loading your chats forever. Or it loads, but the page reloads every time you click Settings, Calls or Status. Both problems show up again and again on r/whatsapp, and most of them are fixed without losing a single message, because your chats live on your phone, not in the browser.
Work through the steps below from the top. The first few take a minute each and fix most cases.
First, find out where the problem is
Two quick checks save a lot of guessing.
- Does WhatsApp work on your phone right now? If messages aren't sending there either, the problem is your phone's connection or WhatsApp itself. Nothing you do in the browser will help, so fix the phone side first or wait it out.
- Does WhatsApp Web load in a private (incognito) window? Open one, go to web.whatsapp.com and link again. If it works there, something stored in your normal browser profile is the cause: old site data or an extension. Jump to steps 2 and 3 below. If it fails in the private window too, start with step 4.
1. Refresh and check the address
Reload the tab with Ctrl + Shift + R (Cmd + Shift + R on a Mac), which skips the cached copy of the page. Check that the address bar says exactly web.whatsapp.com. WhatsApp's help center says Web runs on the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera and Safari, and won't work on some older browsers, so update the browser if it's been a while.
2. Clear the site data for WhatsApp Web only
WhatsApp's own first fixes are clearing the browser cache and cookies, then logging out of WhatsApp Web and back in. You don't need to wipe your whole browser for that.
In Chrome:
- Open web.whatsapp.com.
- Click the icon to the left of the address, then Site settings.
- Click Delete data (older versions say Clear data), confirm, and reload.
- Scan the QR code again.
This removes the local copy of your chats in that browser, which is often where a half-finished sync gets stuck. Your phone still has everything, and the browser downloads a fresh copy when you link it again.
3. Switch off extensions and blockers for a test
If the private window worked, an extension is the likely cause. Turn off ad blockers, privacy tools, antivirus browser add-ons and any WhatsApp Web extensions (ours included), then reload. Turn them back on one at a time to find the one that breaks it. One poster in the restrictions thread suspected their antivirus extension, though nobody confirmed that was the cause.
4. Try another network
WhatsApp Web keeps a live connection open. The help center points out that office and campus Wi-Fi can block it, and suggests trying a different network or a phone hotspot. A VPN or a proxy can cause the same thing, so pause it while you test. If you manage the network yourself, WhatsApp recommends letting traffic to web.whatsapp.com and .whatsapp.net through.
5. Unlink from the phone and link again
Logging out from the browser side doesn't always clear a stuck session. Do it from the phone:
- Android: three-dot menu, then Linked devices.
- iPhone: Settings, then Linked devices.
Tap the browser session, tap Log out, then link the computer again from scratch. While the first sync runs, keep WhatsApp open on your phone and the phone online.
6. Restart both devices
WhatsApp suggests turning the device off, waiting 30 seconds and turning it back on. Do this for the computer and the phone, then link again.
When it fails on every browser and computer
This is the frustrating case. In one r/whatsapp thread, a user's WhatsApp Web hung on Loading your chats in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and the Microsoft Store app on Windows, while the same account kept syncing fine on their Mac, Apple Watch and phone. They had already cleared site data, logged out from the phone and paused their antivirus. Another poster in a separate thread said their page reloaded on every tab change on one number, while a second number worked normally in the same browser.
When the problem follows one account everywhere, browser fixes won't reach it. What's left to try:
- Update WhatsApp on your phone. The linked devices help page currently notes a known issue where some linked devices don't show up to a year of chat history, and asks people to keep WhatsApp updated because fixes ship in regular updates.
- Try the WhatsApp desktop app for Windows or Mac instead of the browser. It's a separate client and sometimes behaves differently.
- Report it from the app. On your phone, go to Settings > Help and contact support, and say exactly which devices work and which don't. Without a report, nobody on WhatsApp's side looks at your account.
Reddit posters describe these cases clearing up on their own after a while, but the reports vary from days to over a month, and nobody in those threads found a reliable fix.
If your account got restricted after using Web
Some r/whatsapp users report their account being restricted right after opening WhatsApp Web, sometimes more than once in a few weeks. The advice in those threads was to stop linking the account to Web for a while and let the restriction expire. Nobody posted an official explanation.
Do check one thing. WhatsApp says linking your account to unofficial apps or websites, now or in the past, can lead to a temporary or permanent ban. Only link through web.whatsapp.com, the official desktop apps and the other devices WhatsApp lists. If a bot, automation tool or "WhatsApp for PC" download asked you to scan a QR code, go to Linked devices on your phone and log that session out.
Two limits worth knowing
WhatsApp lets you link up to four devices to one phone. Linked devices keep working while your phone is off, but WhatsApp logs them out if the phone itself goes unused for more than 14 days. If Web logged you out after a trip or a break, that's usually why, and linking again fixes it.
