WhatsApp message stuck on one gray tick: outage, block, or their phone?
On Friday afternoon, October 16, 2026, a lot of WhatsApp users watched their messages sit on a single gray check mark and assumed the worst about whoever they were texting. For many of them the cause was WhatsApp itself. Outage trackers logged a spike in reports starting around 1:13 PM Eastern, and WABetaInfo posted on X at 1:26 PM: "It's not you: WhatsApp is currently experiencing an outage."
The outage passed. The question it raised comes up every day on r/whatsapp: what does one gray tick mean, and how do you tell a server problem from a phone that's off or a contact who blocked you?
What the check marks mean
WhatsApp's Help Center defines them like this:
- Clock icon: the message hasn't left your phone yet. That's a connection problem on your side.
- One gray check mark: the message left your phone and reached WhatsApp, but hasn't arrived on the recipient's device.
- Two gray check marks: the message was delivered to the recipient's phone or one of their linked devices.
- Two blue check marks: they read it.
In a group, the second check appears only after everyone in the group has received the message, so one tick in a big group is common and means very little.
A single check mark on its own is not a diagnosis. WhatsApp's own page says having a message in that state "is normal" for a while. What matters is how long it lasts and what else you see.
Step 1: Rule out an outage
If messages to everyone are stuck, or you see the clock icon instead of a check mark, start with the service.
- Send a message to someone else, or to yourself. If nothing goes through to anyone, the problem isn't that one person.
- Check an outage tracker such as outage.report or Downdetector, and search "WhatsApp down" on X. During the October 16 incident, outage.report recorded a 20-minute spike affecting the UK, Finland, Ireland and other countries. Adnkronos reported that users in Italy couldn't send messages, including on WhatsApp Web, and that things returned to normal within 15 to 20 minutes. ADSLZone counted more than 6,000 Downdetector reports in Spain alone.
- If it is an outage, wait. Reinstalling the app during an outage won't help and can make things worse if you haven't backed up.
Tracker numbers vary. One site logged the October 16 problem at about 47 minutes, and StatusGator kept it open for hours. WhatsApp doesn't run a public status page for regular users, and we couldn't find any statement from WhatsApp or Meta about the cause.
Step 2: Check your own connection
A clock icon means your phone isn't connected. WhatsApp's suggested fixes are the usual ones:
- Open a website in your browser to confirm the internet works.
- Turn airplane mode on and off.
- Restart your phone.
- Update WhatsApp from your app store.
- Check that your phone's date and time are set correctly.
If your messages to other people deliver fine, your connection is fine and the issue is on the other end.
Step 3: Consider the recipient's phone
When only one person's messages stay on one tick, the most common causes are boring. WhatsApp lists these:
- Their phone is off or out of coverage.
- They've run out of mobile data.
- They saw the notification but haven't opened WhatsApp.
Users on r/whatsapp add another one that trips people up. If the recipient has turned off WhatsApp notifications and background app refresh on their phone, your message may not reach their device until they open the app. In that case it stays on one tick and then jumps to two the moment they open WhatsApp, which makes it look like they were ignoring you when the app wasn't running.
One Reddit user also noticed that some contacts on older phones would get a newer message with two ticks while an earlier message stayed stuck on one. If a later message delivers, the person isn't blocking you.
Step 4: Look for signs of a block
WhatsApp never tells you that someone blocked you. Its Help Center lists signs that point that way:
- Every message to that contact shows one check mark and never a second.
- You can't see their "last seen" or "online" status.
- You don't see updates to their profile photo.
- You can't see their status updates.
- Your calls to them don't go through.
- If you're a group admin, you can't add them to a group.
WhatsApp adds that these signs can have other explanations. "Last seen" can be hidden in privacy settings, and a phone that's been off for days will also leave everything on one tick.
A visible profile picture doesn't prove you aren't blocked. Several r/whatsapp threads describe seeing a contact's photo and bio while blocked. What you lose is updates: the picture you see is the last one before the block.
A reasonable rule of thumb: one tick for a few hours means very little. One tick for several days, combined with calls that never connect and no "last seen," while the person is clearly active elsewhere, most likely means a block.
What not to do
- Don't reinstall WhatsApp to "fix" one stuck message. It won't change how the message is delivered on their side, and you can lose chats if your backup is out of date.
- Don't keep resending. The original message is already queued on WhatsApp's servers. Sending ten more just means ten more arrive at once when their phone reconnects.
- Don't rely on a third-party "blocked checker" app. WhatsApp says it can't tell you whether someone blocked you, so an outside app has no way of knowing either.
Quick answer
If everything is stuck, check for an outage and wait. If you see a clock, fix your connection. If only one person stays on one tick, give it time, try a WhatsApp call, and check their last seen. If none of that has changed after a few days, try reaching them another way, such as a regular text or phone call.
