How to search WhatsApp Web by date, and what to do when the date you need won't load

Short answer: open the chat, click the magnifying glass, click the calendar icon (Search By Date) and pick a day. It works inside one chat at a time. If the day you pick is older than the history WhatsApp Web holds, the message may only exist on your phone. We build the WA Folders Chrome extension, which has no date filter, and the last section says how we use it alongside the calendar.

Search by date on WhatsApp Web

These are the steps on the Web tab of WhatsApp's Help Center page How to search WhatsApp, checked October 24, 2026.

  1. Click the chat you want to search.
  2. Click Search (the magnifying glass).
  3. Click Search By Date (the calendar icon).
  4. Select the date you want to search.

The same page says date search works in an individual or group chat. It describes the search on the Chats tab as a keyword search, so there is no all-chats-by-date view on that page. For a keyword, click the magnifying glass at the top of the Chats tab, or open a chat, click the magnifying glass and type the word or phrase. Click a result to open that message in the chat.

Find a group by name, subject or member

The Help Center says you can search for a group by its subject, its contents or a contact you know is in it. Typing a contact name shows the groups you share with them under Groups in common. If a group is missing, it also tells you to check the Archived Chats section of the Chats tab.

When the date you pick shows nothing

WhatsApp Web is a linked device, so it does not hold everything your phone does. WhatsApp's page About message history on linked devices (checked October 24, 2026) says right after you link a device your phone sends it a copy of your most recent message history. It adds that not all messages and chats are synced to linked devices, that WhatsApp Desktop syncs more message history than WhatsApp Web, and that to see or search your full history you should check your phone.

WhatsApp's page about linked devices also mentions a known issue where some linked devices don't display up to one year of chat history, and says you can still see your chat history on your primary device.

We have not found WhatsApp documenting what the date picker does for a day outside the history your computer holds. If the day you need gives nothing, open the same chat on your phone and search there.

One more case from the same search page: if you recently restored your WhatsApp chat history, the Help Center says it can take time to recreate the search database, and restored chats can be searched once the backup finishes. If you remember a word from the message, a keyword search in that chat is often quicker than paging through dates.

Save a date range instead of searching for it

If you need a stretch of one chat as a file, WhatsApp's own Export chat on WhatsApp Web has an All messages or Custom date range choice, according to the Web tab of its export page, which we checked on October 21, 2026. Where WA Folders fits

WA Folders is a Chrome extension for web.whatsapp.com only. It never sends messages, it keeps its data in Chrome on your computer and it isn't affiliated with WhatsApp or Meta. Its search is not a date search. It matches three things in one box: chat names, your private notes on chats, and message text from chats you opened with the extension installed. The filters next to the box are by folder, notes only, or links only.

How we use it with the calendar: a private note on a chat (for example "invoice sent 12 March") is searchable in WA Folders, because WhatsApp can't search a note you keep outside it. Search the note, click the result to open the chat, then use WhatsApp's calendar search in that chat to jump to the day. WA Folders opens the chat, not the exact message, so the calendar or an in-chat keyword does the last step.

The free plan has no time limit and includes 5 folders and the first 5 search results per search. Pro is a one-time $4.99 payment with no subscription and adds Load whole chat, which collects the older messages WhatsApp Web can load into the search index. It can only collect what WhatsApp Web itself can load, so it does not recover history that never reached your computer.
