How to silence unknown callers on WhatsApp, and why some still ring

Published

Anyone who has your phone number can call you on WhatsApp. If spam calls from numbers you don't know keep lighting up your phone, WhatsApp has a switch for that, and it takes about ten seconds to turn on. It also has one big exception that catches a lot of people out, which is covered below.

Turn on Silence unknown callers

The setting is in the same place on both phones, with a slightly different first tap.

Android

  1. Tap the three-dot menu, then Settings > Privacy.
  2. Tap Calls.
  3. Turn on Silence unknown callers.

iPhone

  1. Tap Settings (or your profile picture), then Privacy.
  2. Tap Calls.
  3. Turn on Silence unknown callers.

Calls from unknown numbers stop ringing from that point on.

What happens to a silenced call

Your phone doesn't ring, but the call isn't thrown away. WhatsApp's Help Center says silenced calls still show up in the Calls tab and in your notifications. If the caller has a chat with you, you'll also see a Silenced unknown caller message in that chat. You can call them back from either place.

So if you're waiting on a call from a courier, a clinic or a new client whose number you haven't saved, check the Calls tab before assuming they never tried. Better still, save the number first if you know it.

Who counts as "unknown"

This is the part that confuses people. WhatsApp treats a caller as unknown if you haven't saved them as a contact and you haven't contacted them before.

The Help Center spells out the catch: if you call or message a silenced caller, you won't be able to silence their calls in future. One message is enough. Send a delivery driver "I'm at the side door" and that number can ring through from then on, even though it isn't in your contacts.

A post in r/whatsapp from March describes exactly this. The writer had the setting on, messaged a few unsaved numbers for one-off reasons, and then got full ringing calls from them. They also found that Truecaller and replacement dialer apps didn't help, because those apps screen ordinary phone calls, not WhatsApp calls.

When an unsaved number still rings

Work through these in order.

  1. Check that the switch is on. Settings > Privacy > Calls. If you moved to a new phone or reinstalled WhatsApp, confirm it's still on; it's the fastest thing to rule out.
  2. Look for an earlier chat with that number. Search the number in your chat list. If you ever messaged or called it, it no longer counts as unknown, and this setting won't silence it.
  3. Block the number if you never want to hear from it. Blocking stops their calls and messages entirely, and also hides your last seen, online status and profile photo changes from them. On Android, open the chat, tap the three-dot menu > More > Block. On iPhone, open the chat, tap the contact's name and choose Block. You can also report the number at the same time.
  4. Block from the first message. When a number you don't know messages you, WhatsApp's blocking guide for Android points to a Block button in the safety tools shown in that chat and on the "sender not in your contacts" notice. If a stranger messages first, block them there before they get a chance to call.

There is no built-in setting today that says "ring only for saved contacts, no exceptions". If that's what you want, the closest you can get is to block one-off numbers once you're done with them.

Two related settings worth a look

While you're in Privacy, open Advanced and look at Protect IP address in calls. With it on, WhatsApp relays your calls through its servers so the other person can't see your IP address. WhatsApp notes that call quality may drop a little, and that relayed calls are still end-to-end encrypted. Group calls are always relayed anyway.

The Privacy checkup option at the top of the Privacy screen walks you through the main privacy settings one at a time, covering your messages, calls and personal information. It's a quick way to see which settings you've left on the default.

What's coming: call filtering

On October 20, 2026, WABetaInfo reported that WhatsApp is building a replacement for Silence unknown callers on Android, found in beta 2.26.41.4. According to the report, it offers three choices for calls from unknown numbers:

  • Never: every call rings, saved or not.
  • Silence: the current behavior, where the call shows in the Calls tab and notifications but the phone stays quiet.
  • Ask why they're calling: WhatsApp answers, asks the caller for a reason, and shows you a private transcript so you can decide whether to pick up.

WABetaInfo says the transcript is generated on the phone using language packs, the same approach WhatsApp uses for voice message transcripts, so the call audio doesn't go to WhatsApp's servers. It's similar to the call screening Apple added in iOS 26 for regular phone calls.

The feature is still in development and isn't available to beta testers yet, and WhatsApp hasn't said when it will ship. Until then, Silence unknown callers plus blocking is what you have.
